Visibility at meetups

Posted by WriterJanet on May 23, 2009 at 3:43 AM

I would like to open up a discussion on how to make ourselves more visible at meetups. Every meetup group I belong to has the problem of members finding each other. Some groups have the organizer answering his or her cellphone all night, but that is not very effective for a group that meets in libraries and coffee houses and wants serious critique and enlightening discussion. Sooo, what works? A pre-arranged meetup place? Smaller venues? Holdling up a sign? A sign at the table? Teeshirts?

I promise, we will listen to any reasonable suggestion. Of course, you may have to pay for the billboard in Times Square, but that is your choice...

We are still working on this. There was a time that I showed up with huge fluorescent green signs and then nobody showed. It sometimes works like that. I think telling people what we are wearing and having a central meeting place helps a lot.

Do we have people arriving at a meet up and unable to find the group? In Webster, I was there early, but as soon as Susan walked in, I knew without knowing she was the organizer---so I followed her to make sure and then introduced myself. Bigger signs maybe? at the door with an arrow?

Well, the pre-arranged meetup works. And once the members know who they are looking for, it becomes easier. Other than that, the Meetup signs didn't help, b'c they seemed unnoticed until the members were at the actual table. Other than that... I am still working on the t-shirts. We should allow the people who are running registers or an information desk that we are meeting a group of people. Also, if you can have a definitely identifiable shirt.... i.e. something written on the front, specific color that is bright and stands out, etc. it really helps.
